5 GHz and 6 GHz bands for WISP: noise, DFS, and migration

How to think about saturated 5 GHz vs 6 GHz (UNII-5/7 and related) when planning backhaul, and which NetPoint families fit each band.

5 GHz remains common in WISP, but in urban areas co-channel and adjacent noise cut MCS and stability. Shielding (NPX5 series) and strong F/B help, but they do not create clean spectrum.

6 GHz adds capacity for PTP when regulation and the radio allow it. NetPoint NP6 / NPX6 / NPUW families cover ultrawide or focused 5.9–7.2 GHz ranges depending on model — always check the datasheet and local certification.

DFS and radar: on DFS channels, a radar event can pull the channel. Design with alternate channels and do not assume 100% uptime on DFS without monitoring.

Typical migration: leave PtMP or short hops on 5 GHz and move critical backhaul to 6 GHz with higher-discrimination antennas. Do not change only the radio: antenna and mount decide whether the hop actually “cleans up”.
